Espalier form derived from U shape. Both framework branches run upwards in a wavy line.
Characteristics:
2 framework branches (by means of a T-junction)
both framework branches are wavy upwards (mirror symmetry)
fruit wood is grown close to the framework branch
Advice
It is important to create flowing curves. On the one hand, because a symmetrical pattern looks much better. On the other hand, because uneven curves, in particular a ‘knee’, lead to local obstruction and congestion of the sap flow. The latter induces shoot growth that is unevenly distributed over the framework branch. In a later phase, this can be at the expense of the espalier shape, for example because large pruning wounds are unavoidable.
