Espalier derived from U shape. Both framework branches cross each other at the bottom and then run vertically upwards.
Characteristics:
2 framework branches (by means of a T-junction)
Both framework branches cross each other at the base and are then vertically trained
Fruit wood is grown close to the framework branch
Advice
The sharp bends obstruct and push the sap flow extra strongly. This is accompanied by a strong tendency for shoot formation on the ‘elbows’; prune these shoots completely at an early stage (with a flat cut), to prevent excessive shoot growth at a later stage. Neglecting this pruning will ultimately be at the expense of the espalier shape. For example, because more drastic pruning is then necessary, resulting in large pruning wounds.
