The slanted espalier shape makes it possible to maintain longer framework branches in a lower fruit wall. This is important if the growth power of the tree is too great to grow small trees from it.
Specific applications
If a plant in a row of Slanted Single Cords falls away, an empty space is created. In the past, the Slanted Cord next to it was transformed into a Slanted Cord with a second tier, to fill the empty space. That worked easier (and was cheaper) than planting a new tree.
Note: The preferred name “oblique cord with two levels” best describes the context in which this espalier should be seen. That is why it was decided to classify this espalier under the heading Single Oblique Cord, despite the fact that the espalier has not one but two framework branches. The alternative name “single oblique cord with two levels” would be self-contradictory, because a single cord has only one framework branch.
Advice
To be used to fill the empty space of a fallen plant in a row of Slanted Cords. Planting a new tree (‘filling in’) is then not necessary.
