The degree of overlap depends on:

  • planting distance
  • length of framework branches
  • number of tiers

Opinion

This espalier has crossing framework branches and that is in principle undesirable. Please note that the space distribution (lighting) is sub-optimal in places where the framework branches cross each other. In those places more shoot thinning (or thinning of fruiting seats) is necessary, so that the remaining shoots receive sufficient sunlight.

This espalier has ‘open holes’ low to the ground. The related espalier, the Belgian Fence, has a better use of space. The cultivation phase of this espalier is also easier and faster.
