Description
A series of Slanted Strings, planted at regular intervals. The result is a pattern of slanted lines. This pattern makes it possible to grow framework branches that are longer than the fruit wall is high.
The 45° position provides a favourable balance between vegetative growth (formation of shoots and leaves) and generative development (formation of flower buds and fruiting).
In the past, a series of Slanted Strings was mainly planted on production farms, if the espalier structure was not high enough for Vertical Strings.

Opinion
[mks_icon icon=”fa-lightbulb-o” color=”#ff0000″ type=”fa”] You can also plant the espalier fruit trees at an angle in the ground immediately after planting!
A row of diagonal cords has two advantages:
- good production
Frame branches at a 45° angle naturally have a favourable balance between leaf formation and fruiting. - many cultivars in a small space
Using multiple cultivars ensures better pollination, more spread of harvest, possibility to grow more varieties with different tastes, etc. It is also relevant for scientists who want to create a gene bank.
Please note that there may be differences in growth habit (vigor) between cultivars.
Using multiple cultivars results in a less sleek appearance and requires more work.
Make use of the empty spaces at either end with a different slate shape.
If the trellis structure is high enough, you can also use Vertical Cords instead of Inclined Cords.
