Description
If you repeat one or two espalier shapes in series, a pattern will automatically emerge.
If you plant a series of espalier fruit trees that all have the same espalier shape, a pattern will naturally emerge. You can also create a pattern by planting 2 different espalier shapes alternately.
Features:
- row of 4+ espalier fruit trees
- the fruit trees have an identical espalier shape, or alternating two espalier shapes
- fruitwood is grown short on the stem branch

Opinion
Many espalier forms in this category have crossing framework branches, which is in principle undesirable. Please note that the space distribution (lighting) is sub-optimal in places where the framework branches cross. In those places, more shoot thinning (or thinning of fruiting seats) is necessary, so that the remaining shoots (and fruits) receive sufficient sunlight.
It is advisable to limit the number of cultivars and espalier forms to one.
If you do combine two (or more) different cultivars, select varieties with similar growth habits and vigour.
If the cultivars used differ greatly in growth, this will result in a less attractive, restless image.

Types
Most of the patterns below are built up by repeating one espalier (with or without a difference in height). The Cossonet scheme is an important exception to this and is a repetition of two espalier shapes.
The drawings below give an impression of the winter picture, when the leaves are off the framework branches. During the growing season, when the trees are leafy, the espalier form is less easy to recognize.
