Description
The Lorette Palmette was developed by Louis Lorette as an improved Gaucher Palmet with a central branch. Characteristic of this espalier is the odd number of U-shapes with a ‘twist’ in the heart branch; all framework branches lie in one flat plane.
Features:
- two-dimensional slate form with parallel stemmed branches
- all branches end in a U shape
- odd number of U shapes (minimum 3)
- ‘twist’ in the heart branch
- fruitwood is grown short on the stem branch
This espalier fruit shape is named after its inventor: Louis Lorette (1846 – 1925). He was a French Practical Teacher of Fruit Growing at the Horticultural School in Wagnonville near Douai (Northwest France). The orchard in Wagnonville was famous for its espalier tree shapes and Lorette pruning.
