Description

The Lorette Palmette was developed by Louis Lorette as an improved Gaucher Palmet with a central branch. Characteristic of this espalier is the odd number of U-shapes with a ‘twist’ in the heart branch; all framework branches lie in one flat plane.

Features:

  • two-dimensional slate form with parallel stemmed branches
  • all branches end in a U shape
  • odd number of U shapes (minimum 3)
  • ‘twist’ in the heart branch
  • fruitwood is grown short on the stem branch

This espalier fruit shape is named after its inventor: Louis Lorette (1846 – 1925). He was a French Practical Teacher of Fruit Growing at the Horticultural School in Wagnonville near Douai (Northwest France). The orchard in Wagnonville was famous for its espalier tree shapes and Lorette pruning.

Opinion

The inventor, Louis Lorette, considered this espalier as an improved Gaucher Palmet. The twist in the heart branch serves to slow down the growth force there, so that the growth force is better distributed over the tree, and maintenance of the espalier is easier. In practice, the Lorette Palmet has hardly made any headway. [mks_icon icon=”fa-thumbs-up” color=”#009900″ type=”fa”] For additional info see main article: Palmette.
