Description

Palmette with horizontal, parallel stalked branches. Usually 5 or more tiers.

The horizontal palmette is a variant of the sloping palmette. A palmet with horizontal tiers is initially raised as a palmet with sloping branches; afterwards, the branches are laid down horizontally and re-tied.
Note: The5th and subsequent tier(s) are, however, led directly horizontally.

The palmette with horizontal branches is more difficult to maintain than a palmette with sloping branches, because with this livery form has a tendency for irregularly distributed growth:

  • The tree is prone to strong growth in the head.
  • The tree is prone to branch shortening on the lower stem branches.

Sound knowledge and experience during tree propagation can largely prevent problems at mature tree stage.

This slate form was widely used in the past.

The Cossonnet Scheme is a cultivation system with alternating palmette-with-slanting branches and palmette-with-horizontal branches.

Opinion

The Horizontal Palmette is trickier than the Oblique Palmette, both in propagation and mature stages. This lay form requires solid expert knowledge.

A thorough propagation phase is required to prevent growth from gradually migrating to the upper stem branches later in life, and the lower stem branches languishing correspondingly.

A leifruit grower with less experience is better off tying on the stem branches in a slightly inclined position instead of completely horizontal.
