Description

The Peacock’s Tail is a sub-variant of the Symmetrical Fan. This espalier has a very high degree of symmetry and a great many framework branches.

Features of standard tree:

  • two-dimensional espalier shape with plane-filling framework branches
  • a large number of straight framework branches emerge from the base
  • framework branches are very regularly distributed
  • fruit wood is grown close to the framework branch

The Peacock’s Tail is a fan shape in which the framework branches are nicely distributed and all of equal length. This fan shape has a strict symmetry. The framework branches are somewhat closer together than in other fan shapes. The number of framework branches (and T-junctions) is variable.

This espalier form is only suitable for crops (varieties) with short fruit wood, such as certain cultivars of pome fruits (pear, apple).

This espalier shape was popular in Boskoop at the end of the 19th century.

Opinion

Keep in mind that the most vertical framework branches tend to grow fastest, at the expense of framework branches with a more horizontal position.

When a framework branch falls away, this is usually disastrous for the espalier; replacing a framework branch is hardly possible. At most, you can move the remaining framework branches slightly so that the space is filled evenly.
