Note: This espalier is popularly called Archway. Strictly speaking, the term “Archway” does not refer to the espalier, but to the metal espalier construction. The general terms foliage corridor and archway do not specifically refer to espalier fruit trees.
Description
A series of arched guided fruit trees in a row, creating the impression of a tunnel. Before planting, a permanent metal construction is first set up. You can cover the berceau with, for example, Palmettes or a Belgian Fence.
Features of the espalier form:
- series of arched guided fruit trees in a row
- permanent espalier construction, with connections between the arch shapes
- the shape of the arches can be round to angular
- fruitwood is grown short on the stem branch
A beautiful example of the Berceau is the Pear Lane or in Dutch ‘Perenlaantje” in Hendrik Ido Ambacht: a 500-metre-long canopy walkway of fruit trees that you can walk under!

Opinion
Realize that growing and maintaining a berceau espalier fruit requires a lot of patience, time and space. On the other hand, it is a prominent garden element that brings a lot of joy. Anyone who walks under a berceau fruit tree, especially during the blossom, will automatically become happy.
A tunnel-shaped espalier construction can be covered with various espalier shapes. For example, with cords, palmettes or Belgian fence. In a similar way, you can also cover a pergola or arbour with fruit trees.
If you have a small garden, limit yourself to a Twin Arch shape (‘Gate’).
The espalier construction is permanent. [mks_icon icon=”fa-thumbs-up” color=”#009900″ type=”fa”]For additional information see:
