Opinion
The espalier construction for a tunnel is permanent.
Tips:
- Make sure you have a solid construction of galvanized metal (‘stainless‘) that can withstand the test of time.
- Stabilize the structure with:
- connections between the arches and
- cross braces (at each vertical end and at the top of the structure)
- Use metal tension wires to tie up framework branches. Possibly use bamboo sticks to tie up slanting framework branches.
Walking under a tunnel of espalier fruit is a special experience, especially during the blossom in spring. During the rest of the growing season, the fruits decorate the foliage corridor. For an impression, read the article: Pear Lane.
