Opinion
The lighting of the espalier fruit trees is usually suboptimal. This means that the production of fruit is also suboptimal.
For the growing phase you can choose between:
- Directly at the final location
When using simple espalier forms (Vertical Single Cord), it is best to grow the espalier form directly at the final location. - First on a growing field
When you build the walls with more complex espalier shapes (Palmet), it is advisable to first grow the espalier shapes ‘separately’ on a mother bed, and to transplant them and place them together at a later stage.
Tips:- Initially grow a few extra espalier fruit trees and eventually use the best specimens.
- Make sure the fruit trees are prepared for transplanting by annually digging up the roots.
The cultivation phase requires extensive knowledge and experience from the espalier fruit grower.
After a few years, the espalier construction is usually redundant. When choosing the material for the slate construction, take into account the required lifespan. Galvanized iron is more durable than impregnated wood; untreated wood is usually unsuitable. A painted slate construction enhances the appearance.
