Popular name:
‘French vase’
Synonym:
Historical name:
Vase
Alternative name:
This espalier shape was named a few centuries ago after the shape of a ‘vase’, a stone or cast iron object that was found in French castle gardens at the time. Because our current frame of reference is quite different from that of then, this historical espalier shape has been renamed ‘French vase’. This term is more in line with our world of experience. ‘Brocante’ garden vases are still popular as a decorative element for the garden.
Opinion
Suitable as a solitary tree.
