3D Art Forms

Description

Three-dimensional art forms can be created according to the same principles as two-dimensional slate forms.

Features of the espalier form:

  • slate form is derived from a three-dimensional geometric shape
  • fruitwood is grown short on the stem branch

3D art forms are often a showpiece in your garden.

Opinion

3D espalier shapes are ideally suited as a solitary tree, as a focal point in the garden.

Exposure

Make sure that all framework branches are well exposed to the sun:

  • Use these espalier forms as a solitary or as full wind guidance, but not along a fruit wall.
  • If you plant a row of these espalier forms, use a north-south planting direction.

Lead construction

In general, the following applies:

  • For a solitary tree, use a self-supporting metal structure that is firmly anchored in the ground.
  • Use a tension wire construction for a row of trees.

The slate construction is sometimes temporary, sometimes (semi-)permanent in nature.

Main types

The espalier forms are classified according to their basic mathematical shape.

Beam shapes

Standard shapes with the contours of a beam.

Pyramid shapes

Standard shapes with the contours of a pyramid.

Cylinder shapes

Standard shapes with the contours of a tube.

Sphere shapes

Standard shapes with the contours of a sphere.

Arch shapes

Standard shapes with the contours of a tunnel.
