Growing espalier fruit is an old craft and is part of our cultural heritage and living heritage (= green heritage). It contributes significantly to the experience value of a location. This applies in particular to espalier fruit on historic estates, country houses and castles.
Many historical locations have stone garden walls that were once used for the cultivation of espalier fruit. In one situation, espalier fruit is still grown, in another situation, characteristics indicate that the garden wall was once used for espalier fruit cultivation.
The care of espalier fruit (pear, apple etc.) is fundamentally different from that of ‘normal’ fruit. Knowledge of this is mainly spread by word of mouth. Espalier tries to maintain this craft and raise it to a higher level by:
- to systematically bundle knowledge about espalier fruit culture
- to facilitate knowledge transfer
- to unite knowledge carriers

Disclaimer
– Espalier is a non-profit knowledge institution. We collect and share knowledge about espalier fruit and aim to provide independent advice that increases the quality of espalier fruit culture. Complaints can never amount to more than the client paid for an assignment.
– Botanical advice is given on the basis of a sound botanical background, and more than 10 years of experience with the cultivation and maintenance of (historical) espalier fruit at various espalier fruit locations. The person concerned has in the past, among other things, followed an espalier fruit course with Jan Freriks.
– Espalier cannot give a constructional assessment of the condition of a espalier fruit wall; this requires the expertise of a specialized and certified renovation company. Espalier can point out points of interest, so that you can have them examined further by a specialist if necessary.
