The slanted espalier shape makes it possible to maintain longer framework branches with a lower fruit wall. This is important if the growth power of the tree is too great to grow small trees from it.
Specific applications
If a plant in a row of Slanting Single Strings falls away, an empty space is created. In the past, the Slanting String next to it was then transformed into a Slanting String with a second floor, to fill the empty space. This worked easier (and was cheaper) than planting a new tree.
Note: The preferred name “slanting string with two floors” best describes the context in which this espalier should be seen. That is why it was decided to classify this espalier under the heading Single Slanting String, despite the fact that the espalier has not one but two framework branches.
The alternative name “single slanting string with two floors” would be self-contradictory, because a single string only has one framework branch.
Advice
To be used to fill the empty space of a fallen plant in a row of Slanted Cords. Planting a new tree (‘filling in’) is then not necessary.
