Cord-shapes

A cord, or cordon , is an espalier shape in which the trunk has only 1 or 2 main branches:

  • is a single cord a cord with one frame branch.
  • a double cord is a cord with two frame branches.

Due to their early production, good productivity, and easy pruning, all cord shapes are popular for espalier fruit. The vertical and oblique cord shapes are easier to grow and maintain than the horizontal shapes.

Types of Cord Shapes

Horizontal Cord

Horizontal cords are espaliers with a single, horizontally curved frame branch.

Vertical Cord

Vertical cords are espaliers with a single vertical frame branch.
